Key Monster, A Novel of Key West

A burnt-out charter boat captain, a failure at life, Eugene "Winch" Winchell pilots the Stuffed Ham, a 57-foot cruiser he found at an IRS auction. Winch owes a lot of people a lot of money, making him a very unpopular person in his small Maryland hometown. But, after a drunken encounter with "Chessie", the mythical sea monster of the Chesapeake, his life completely crumbles. Winch seeks shelter from his madness in rum-soaked Key West, a new place to make a new start. Unfortunately, he doesn't realize he's being hunted by the former owner of the Ham, Big Jim Quinn, who is determined to recover his beloved yacht even if he has to kill the oblivious captain.

In the sun-splashed Florida Keys, Winch struggles to establish a new charter business, leaving behind the monsters which complicate his life. He finds himself entangled with Laura Chadwick,a beautiful blonde trying to make her own new start and harboring a dark secret; Daiquiri Taylor, a 6-foot, black, Rutgers-educated drag-queen; Steve Stevens, a disgraced reporter who schemes of a return to the big-time; Felix Munoz, a Cuban ballplayer rescued from his crumbling raft with dreams of pitching for the Cubs or Yankees; Marco, a disoriented drug-dealer seeking inner-peace; plus scores of vacationing skinheads, the world's richest man and his B-movie starlet wife, one fed-up mistress, and a rival for Laura who packs a Colt .45 and a grudge.

And, a mysterious creature who may or may not be just a figment of Winch's various addictions.
